He’s Just Not That Into You Reviews, Part 1

Let’s look at a few reviews of He’s Just Not That Into You. Here are two of the not-so-good reviews for the movie:

Years ago, a friend of mine had a particularly cruel boyfriend. We held an intervention, including the gifting of a little book called He’s Just Not That Into You. It wasn’t rocket science, but damn, the book made sense. And it was empowering. So naturally I had high hopes for the movie of the same name. About 20 minutes in, I was ready to throw in the towel. The film’s writers (Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein) apparently missed the point and made the main character, the single Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), psycho. Even her friends roll their eyes and beg her, “Please, do not cyberstalk him.” And then there’s Anna (Scarlett Johansson), the other “bad girl,” who vies for the attention of a married man. I’d like to meet her friend (Drew Barrymore), who eggs her on, saying “you never know, he could leave his wife for you,” and slap her. Or just bypass her and slap the writers for giving into stereotypes rather than exploring real women and real relationships. Feather River Cinemas and Tinseltown. Rated PG-13

You wouldn’t think that a guy who is best known for doing computer commercials would form more connections with an audience than marquee names such as Jennifers Aniston and Connelly, Drew Barrymore and Ben Affleck. Yet this is precisely what we have in director Ken Kwapis’ latest look at romance in He’s Just Not That Into You. Justin Long (Zack and Miri, Live Free or Die Hard), along with Ginnifer Goodwin (Walk the Line), are brilliant, believable and provide enough interest to carry the film by themselves. The performances logged from everybody else are fine with notable mention going to Ms. Connelly for some needed depth in this surfacy movie. Sadly, dishonorable mention goes to Scarlett Johansson for playing the same role from Vicky Cristina Barcelona: a young vivacious flirt who’s too “free” to get bogged down in meaningful relationships. Her performance is phoned in as Johansson appears disinterested in her surroundings, something I don’t believe the character would be.
