Racism sucks, says Scarlett
Scarlett is still shocked and saddened by the racism that still exists in the world. She is disappointed to discover prejudice wherever she travels.
She says, “People are still so racist. It amazed me–all over the world, not just here. I wonder if people are born with prejudice and we have to overcome it. Or is it, we’re born without it and it’s a learned thing?”
Last month’s interview with Parade got her into thinking that “people today are very cynical.”
“They need to bring other people down. Reality television and tabloid magazines—never before did we need to see movie stars taking out their garbage. But all of a sudden, it’s front-page news—trying to figure out who’s dating whom, all that stuff. Who cares? There are so many other things, shocking news stories that we should be paying attention to. But that’s kind of how it goes. It feeds itself.”
Her concerns might not have anything to do with her lineage but more on the state of the world today. The actress is part Jewish through her mother-side. Scarlett’s mom, Melanie Sloan, is also her manager. Scarlett’s Dad, by the way, is Danish. In fact, Scarlett carries two passports though admits that she cannot speak her father’s native language. Her parents got divorced when she was 13. It was during this time when her breakthrough “The Horse Whisperer” with Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas became such a big hit.
